See the Olympics in Hi Def for Free at the Beacon!
The Beacon Cinema, Pittsfield's newly opened independently owned cinema, announced that it will be showing the 2010 Winter Olympics in High Definition beginning Wednesday Feb, 17 through Sun. Feb. 28. The event is free and open to the public each evening from 8:30-11:00.
Owner Richard Stanley said that he was “looking for a way showcase the Beacon’s all digital projection system and give the audience an example of its unique capabilities.” He added “Digital projection allows us to not just be in the movie business but truly in the entertainment business. What better way to share that with an audience than with a fun and free event like the Winter Olympics? Can you imagine Downhill ski racing or Snowboarding on a 40 foot screen? You just can’t get that experience at home.”
Earlier this month the Beacon showed the Super Bowl on the big screen and future events will include XBox video game tournaments, concerts both live and filmed and of course 3D films. “The success of Avatar in 3D has shown that when given a choice, the audience clearly prefers the 3D version of a film that is also being shown in regular 2D,” said Beacon General Manager John Valente.
As a result, the Beacon announced it will be adding a third 3D screen in time for the opening of Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland 3D in March and a slate of additional 3D films scheduled for the upcoming months.
